Visit Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, 3,520 above sea level with a large pagoda containing a part of the watprathatCM1.jpg (8228 bytes)holy relics of the Lord Buddha. A stairway of some 300 steps lead you to the top, which affords slpendid views of the city and its surrounding plains. There is also a cable car to whisk you to the summit if the climb seem too daunting.
In the 14 century, the amazing tale of the building of this temple began when an elephant with a Buddha relic strapped to its back was turn loose in the belief that a temple would be build at the spot where the creature stopped. The elephant climbed the slope of Doi Suthep and the Wat Pratthat was built at its present site. The Buddha relic is now contained  in a large golden pagoda  in the center of the temple
