Map
The island paradise of Koh Samui, in The Gulf of Thailand, is just a 90 minutes express boat SamuiO2.jpg (8069 bytes)ride from the village of Don Sak, near Surat Thani. It is the countries third largest island and the jewel of an archipelago comprising 80 islands, of which only six others are inhabited. Most residents of Samui island are either fisherman or coconut farmers.
Though the island was originally discovered in 1981-82 by the backpacking crowd, transportation improvements in recent years have made access easier and increased it appeal among travelers who are accustomed to a little more comfort.
The main attraction in Samui is its scenic charm enjoying stretches of un-crowded beach, soaking up the sun and revelling in the clear blue waters. Sightseeing is rather limited. The islands perimeter road is 58 km., fully asphalted but a bit narrow.

Chaweng Beach
Chaweng is a long, long beach with accommodation for virtually every known specie two legged homo sapient. Chaweng beach is basically its own little world populated by old style hippies, new style yuppies, sports enthusiasts, swinging singles and happy families, a mixture of both Thai and foreigners from literally everywhere. Possibly Samui's paramount attraction.

Lamai Beach
Lamai beach, a long sandy beach with smooth rocks dotting the shoreline. One curiosity at Lamai are the strange rock formations aptly enough called "Grandmother Rock" and   "Grandfather Rock", because they are similar in shape to female and male genitals.

Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam Beaches
Lipa Noi & Taling Ngam Beaches are quiet and remote. Far from the madding crowds with just one luxury hotel resort - Le Meridien

Maenam Beach
Maenam Beach is secluded but the sand is course. It continues for four kilometres along the coast with several small restaruants.

Big Buddha Beach
Big Buddha Beach is named after the twelve meter tall statue on a tiny islet connected to Samui by causeway. A part of the Koh Fan temple, it is the main attraction. The beach is quiet, the waters calm with a few restaurants around the temple.
