Map of Koh
Samed Thailand
It is the most famous of Rayong's attractions and offers beautiful beaches with
white sand -suitable for relaxation, water sport activities and exploring the coral reefs
beneath the sea.
It is located some 6.5 km from Ban Phe, offers a range of accommodation, and boat
services are available all day long.
From its earlier days as a peaceful and inspirational gateway for numerous artists who retreated there to
capture the island's natural beauty on canvas, Koh Samet now increasingly attracts the
everyday Bangkokian resident and tourist alike to its sandy shores with that same,
alluring web of enticement
The secluded bays with their glistening white sand which squelches underfoot like
freshly fallen snow are still to be found dotted along the island's east coast, continuing
to be the main draw card for visitors, while the hilly interior offers a tropical jungle
experience - home to exotic wildlife such as monkeys, numerous species of birds, squirrels and snakes, including cobra.
The best examples of coral reefs are sited off the island's southern tip and in
some places along the eastern coastline near Wong Duan, one of the more popular beaches,
Several establishments on Wong Duan offer scuba diving excursions to these
attractive marine sports.

Samet Island Thailand was incorporated as part of the Khao Laem Ya National Park in 1981, a move
which has helped to protect it's natural assets, which are after all the basis of the
island's growing appeal as a popular tourist destination. Vegetation and other plant life
has been able to firmly establish itself and visitors can appreciate the healthy bush
growth around the beaches as well as the denser, jungle-like growth of the interior. Among
the older trees to be found inland is the samet tree, treasured for its high quality of
boat building timber.
The island is about 6 km long and some 131 sq km in area.
The best time to visit Koh Samet is during the week from Monday to Friday as
day trippers from the mainland descend upon
the island in force on weekends and public
holidays.
Koh Samet Thailand is essentially and island gateway, ideal for those who sim
ply
want to relax and forget the rest of the world for a while.
From the moment you step onto the wharf in the main village you are struck with the
unmistakable atmosphere of the always attractive "island is the
sun" holiday.
Getting to Koh Samed is not difficult. A regular taxi boat service
operates from the village of Ban Phe in Rayong province, the journey costing Bht. 50 one
way. The boats used for the transfer accommodate 15 to 20 people and although a timetable
has been devised, it is often better not to wait for the specified time and head for the
jetty anyway, as a boat will depart when it is full regardless of what time it is. First
departure is around 0800 hrs and the last, to be safe, is usually about 1700 hrs
