Koh Samet, which boasts beautiful white sand beaches and coral reefs ideal for scuba
diving is gaining popularity as a side-trip from Pattaya.
Ferries ply the narrow stretch of sea between the mainland village
of Ban Phe, located 17 km east along the coast from Rayong and the small village on the
island. Part of national park, the island now has a number of small bungalow resorts on
its west coast bays and one small village on the northern-most tip close to the
mainland.
As national parks go the island has very little vegetation. Most of the trees were
cut down or burned, but over the last 10 years secondary growth has taken place giving the
island shrubs and bushes and plenty of coconut trees along its coast to provide shelter.
The climate in Rayong is tropical, generally warm and humid with abundant rainfall,
average temperature is around 28 degrees C.
Best months to visit are from November through February
Place of interest
Ban Phe
Located 22 km from town, this is a busy fishing port, the centre of local marine
produce, characterised by narrow streets of shops and houses, and is the stopping-off
point for visitors enroute to Ko Samet.
Boats leave regularly for the island from the piers. Shops in the main street stock
a wide variety of marine produce and many souvenirs and trinkets fashioned from shells of
different shades and sizes.
Koh Samet
It is the most famous of Rayong's attractions and offers beautiful beaches
with white sand -suitable for relaxation, water sport activities and exploring the coral
reefs beneath the sea.
It is located some 6.5 km from Ban Phe, offers a range of accommodation, and boat
services are available all day long.
From its earlier days as a peaceful and inspirational gateway for numerous artists
who retreated there to capture the island's
natural beauty on canvas, Ko
Samet now increasingly attracts the everyday Bangkokian resident and tourist alike to its
sandy shores with that same, alluring web of enticement
The secluded bays with their glistening white sand which squelches underfoot like
freshly fallen snow are still to be found dotted along the island's east coast, continuing
to be the main draw card for visitors, while the hilly interior offers a tropical jungle
experience - home to exotic wildlife such as monkeys, numerous species of birds,
squirrels and snakes, including cobra.
The best examples of coral reefs are sited off the island's southern tip and in
some places along the eastern coastline near Wong Duan, one of the more popular beaches,
Several establishments on Wong Duan offer scuba diving excursions to these
attractive marine sports.
Koh Samet was incorporated as part of the Khao Laem Ya National Park in 1981, a move
which has helped to protect it's natural assets, which are after all the basis of the
island's growing appeal as a popular tourist destination. Vegetation and other plant life
has been able to firmly establish itself and visitors can appreciate the healthy bush
growth around the beaches as well as the denser, jungle-like growth of the interior. Among
the older trees to be found inland is the samet tree, treasured for its high quality of
boat building timber.
The island is about 6 km long and some 131 sq km in area.
The best time to visit Ko Samet is during the week from Monday to Friday as
day trippers from the mainland descend uponn the island in force on weekends and public
holidays.
Koh Samed is essentially and island gateway, ideal for those who simply want to
relax and forget the rest of the world for a while.
From the moment you step onto the wharf in the main village you are struck with the
unmistakable atmosphere of the always attractive "island is the
sun" holiday.
Getting to Koh Samed is not difficult. A regular taxi boat service
operate from the village of Ban Phe in Rayong province, the journey costing Bt30 one way.
The boats used for the transfer accommodate 15 to 20 people and although a timetable has
been devised, it is often better not to wait for the specified time and head for the jetty
anyway, as a boat will depart when it is full regardless of what time it is. First
departure is around 0800 and the last, to be safe, is usually about 1700.
King Taksin Shirne
Located at Wat Lum Mahachai Chumpon, it commemorates King Taksin's brief
visit to Rayong.
