Vacation Thailand
- Phi Phi Islands ... by ash-hotel.com![]()
Thailand is a traveler's dream destination. Especially if
your dreams are those of tropical islands with secluded beaches, azure blue waters, powdery white sands, and bending palms that sway gently
to the breeze.
Phi
Phi Don
Phi Phi Don, famed for picture postcard crescent
shaped beaches, attracts those looking for peace and serenity; while Phi Phi lay, with its
towering limestone cliffs and clear coral lagoons, attracts the adventurous. Together, the
pair of islands -- collectively called Phi Phi -- are perfect for "get-away."
Phi Phi Lay
Phi Phi Lay, with its famous "Viking" cave
is a popular half day trip from the main island. The cave has impressive
rock paintings of galleons, probably representations of British, Dutch, and Portuguese
cutters that sailed these waters in the days when they were colonial powers in Southeast
Asia. But the main feature of this uninhabited island are the limestone
cliffs. A bay, almost a lake, circled on all sides by cliff and emerald green waters, from
part of Phi Phi Lay. It is called Pheh Bay. Opposite it is Maya Bay, dominated by high
cliffs and powdery sand. The scenery here is simply stunning. (This area is now
controversial because of the filming of Leonardo di Caprio movie, which environmentalists
strongly oppose.)

Krabi
Administratively,
the islands are part of Krabi Province. However, they can both be reached by boat from
Phuket or Krabi. In Krabi, there are two piers where boats leave for Phi Phi Don. Chao Fah
pier in Krabi offers more choices of regular and air conditioned express services.
There are usually four crossings a day, with the express boat departing at 10:30
a.m. and 2:30 p.m. the journey takes boat one hour. Regular boats take about two-and-a
half hours.
Ao Nang
Ao Nang (Nang Bay) about 10 minutes by car from Krabi
town, also provides boat service, but subject to weather conditions. Big Fast boats can be
hired from Phuket, the fare depending on boat type. Schedules and journey times may change
during monsoon season with fewer crossing a day.
