Vacation
Thailand - Pai ... by ash-hotel.com![]()
Midway between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai is a pretty nook of a place called Pai. It may be small with only a few streets in a town of 3,000 people but Pai has long played a major role in Northern Thailand's transportation system. It was an important rest-and-relay stop for all vehicles and goods' between Mae Hong Son and Chiang Mai. And because of its strategic location, also half-way between Chiang Mai and the Myanmar border, Pai was one of the few towns that had the Northern Thailand Myanmar (then Burma) road built passing through it by the Japanese using forced labour during World War II.
It is this same road that visitors take when travelling to Pai.
Nestled in a verdant valley surrounded by rolling hills, Pai is increasingly becoming more popular among the trail blazing packers who are the first to recognise the protential of a destination long before anyone else.
Pai's popularity is obvious: it is scenic, unspoilt ` and not
over-run with tourists. Best of all, it offers myriad activities such as trekking,
river-rafting and visits to villages of ethnic minorities. And unlike many places which
require travel by boat or by road to a point before you can start trekking, walks
originate in Pai itself
The longer treks last seven days, going from Pai to Mae Hong Son , offering plcturesque
scenery along the way. For a sampling of Pai's natural beauty, the three- to four-hour
walk in th e vicinity of Pai's hilltribe villages is recommended.
About a dozen Shan villages' are scattered throughout the Pai area. The other half-dozen
villages belong to the Lisu ~~nd Lahu minority groups. There is also a Kuomintang (KMT)
refugee camp. Two waterfalls, a hot springs and a small elephant raining camp make up the
other attractions on the walking routes.
We sampled a half-day walk from the aptly-named
Lisu village of Santi Chol (stream of tranquillity) to a nearby waterfall some four to
five kilometres away
The Lisus are one of Northern Thailands more brightly-dressed hilltribes sporting
green tunics, trimmed with red piping in Chinese-samfoo style and worn over loose black
cropped tunics with colorful embroidery decorating the sleeves and necklines.
