Koh Lanta is a district of Krabi Province that consists of 52 islands having a total population of 18,000. The geography of Koh Lanta is typified by stretches of mangrove interrupted by coral-rimmed beaches, rugged hills, and huge umbrella trees. Twelve of all fifty-two islands are inhabited, and of these, four are easily accessible: Koh Klang, Koh Bubu, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Modest beach accommodation is available on the group's largest island, Koh Lanta Yai, a long, slender portion of sand and coral with low, forested hills down the middle. Lanta Yai Island has long been a favourite for adventurous hikers.

Mu Koh Lanta National Park comprises of many different-sized is lands, some of which are surround by beautiful coral reefs such as Koh Ha, Koh Rok and Koh Hai. The main island in the park is Koh Lanta District.  Koh Lanta Yai, where both the District Headquarters and National Park Office are located. The island itself is generally rugged and mountainous. There are beaches both gravelly and sandy toward the south.

The only accommodations in the area are Koh Lanta Yai; nothing is available on Koh Lanta Noi, just to the northeast and the second largest island in the group of Lanta islands. Koh Lanta Resorts are almost all single-story, with only a few buildings on the island having a second floor. Almost all accommodation is provided in individual bungalows. All bungalows have their own bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. Due to the tropical climate, hot water is only provided by a few resorts. Resorts have a restaurant providing meals from early till 21:00 hours or later and provide laundry service. Most are built using natural, ecological materials and blend well into their surroundings. Koh Lanta has a magical soothing effect on visitors as many people arrive there have planned to spend a few days and they stayed for weeks and even months at last  enjoying the friendly relaxing ambience. Stunning white sand beaches grace the island's east coast. The water is clear and a great variety of fish and sea life abound.

The best swimming and snorkelling is found at the northwest beach area called Laem Kaw Kwang, west of the island's main town of Ban Sala Dan, at the northern tip of island. This area is the largest settlement on the island and has a couple of ferry piers, tour outfits, dive shops, and Siam City Bank where money exchange service is available. The district capital Ban Koh Lanta, on the lower east coast, boasts a post office and a long pier. The village of  Ban Sangkha-U on Lanta Yai's southern tip is a traditional muslim fishing village and the people are friendly.

Things to see and do in Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is full of adventure, with great holiday activities including snorkeling, scuba diving, jungle walks, waterfalls, elephant trekking, horse riding, kayak eco-tours and Thai massage. Visitors can revel in the island's peaceful and relaxing beaches before setting off on short hiking trips to explore some of the island's wonderful waterfalls and caves. You can also enjoy trip to the centre of Koh Lanta Yai where a five or six cavern limestone cave complex, called Tham Khao Mai Kaew, a narrow track through a ruber plantation leads to the cave from the lower part of the two cross-island roads. There are coral reefs along parts of the western side of Lanta Yai and along Laem Khaw Kwang (Deer Neck Cape).

According to Koh Lanta Dive Centre in Ban Sala Dan, the undersea pinnacles of Hin Muang and Hin Daeng further southwest are even better, with visibility of up to 30 m in good weather, hard and soft corals, and plenty of large schooling fish such as sharks, tuna and manta ray. Whale sharks has also been spotted in the area.

Insider Tips
Change money before you go there. Although a number of bungalow owners will change money for you in a pinch, their rates will be awful. The  best bet is to do it in Krabi or any other places before you go to Lanta. However, if you need to change some money when you are in Koh Lanta, Siam City Bank with exchange services are available at the northern tip of the island, the area called Ban Sala Dan.

How to get there?
The island provides short visitors to Krabi province. The 27-kilometre island has plenty of beautiful beaches and can be reached by either taking a two-hour express boat from Krabi's Chao Fah pier or taking a twice-daily car ferry from Krabi, which passes Lanta Noi Island. Easily accessible from airports at Krabi, Trang and Phuket.
