Vacation Thailand - Lanta Island
... by ash-hotel.comKoh Lanta
is a district
of Krabi Province that consists of 52 islands having a total p
opulation
of 18,000. The geography of Koh Lanta is typified by stretches of mangrove
interrupted by coral-rimmed beaches, rugged hills, and huge umbrella trees.
Twelve of all fifty-two islands are inhabited, and of these, four are easily
accessible: Koh Klang, Koh Bubu, Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai. Modest
beach accommodation is available
on the group's largest island, Koh Lanta Yai, a long, slender portion of sand
and coral with low, forested hills down the middle. Lanta Yai Island has long
been a favourite for adventurous hikers.
Mu
Koh Lanta National Park comprises of man
y
different-sized is lands, some of which are surround by beautiful coral reefs
such as Koh Ha, Koh Rok and Koh H
ai.
The main island in the park is Koh Lanta District.
Koh Lanta Yai, where both the District Headquarters
and National Park Office are located. The island itself is generally rugged and
mountainous. There are beaches both gravelly and sandy toward the south.
The
only accommodations in the area are Koh Lanta Yai; nothing is available on Koh
Lanta Noi, just to the northeast and the second largest island in the group of
Lanta islands. Koh Lanta Resorts are almost all single-story, with only a few
buildings on the island having a second floor. Almost all accommodation is
provided in individual bungalows.
All bungalows have their own bathroom with shower, toilet and basin. Due to the
tropical climate, hot water is only provided by a few resorts. Resorts have a
restaurant providing meals from early till 21:00 hours or later and provide
laundry service. Most are built using natural, ecological materials and blend
well into their surroundings. Koh Lanta has a magical soothing effect on
visitors as many people arrive there have planned to spend a few days and they
stayed for weeks and even months at last
enjoying the friendly relaxing ambience. Stunning white sand beaches
grace the island's east coast. The water is clear and a great variety of fish
and sea life abound.
The
best swimming and snorkelli
ng
is found at the northwest beach area called
Laem Kaw Kwang, west of the island's main town of Ban Sala Dan, at the northern
tip of island. This area is the largest settlement on the island and has a
couple of ferry piers, tour outfits, dive shops, and Siam City Bank where money
exchange service is available. The district capital Ban Koh Lanta, on the lower
east coast, boasts a post office and a long pier. The village of
Ban Sangkha-U on Lanta Yai's southern tip is a traditional muslim fishing
village and the people are friendly.

Lanta is full of adventure, with great holiday activities including snorkeling,
scu
ba

relaxing beaches before setting off on short hiking trips to explore some of the

Kaew, a narrow track through a ruber plantation leads to the cave from
the lower part of the two cross-island roads. There are coral reefs along parts
of the western side of Lanta Yai and along Laem Khaw Kwang (Deer Neck Cape).
According
to Koh Lanta Dive Centre in Ban Sala Dan, the undersea pinnacles of Hin Muang
and Hin Daeng further southwest are even better, with visibility of up to 30 m
in good weather, hard and soft corals, and plenty of large schooling fish such
as sharks, tuna and manta ray. Whale sharks has also been spotted in the area.
Insider Tips
Change
money before you go there. Although a number of bungalow owners will change
money for you in a pinch, their rates will be awful. The
best bet is to do it in Krabi or any other places before you go to Lanta.
However, if you need to change some money when you are in Koh Lanta, Siam City
Bank with exchange services are available at the northern tip of the island, the
area called Ban Sala Dan.
How to get there?
The
island provides short visitors to Krabi province. The 27-kilometre island has
plenty of beautiful beaches and can be reached by either taking a two-hour
express boat from Krabi's Chao Fah pier or taking a twice-daily car ferry from
Krabi, which passes Lanta Noi Island. Easily accessible from airports at Krabi,
Trang and Phuket.
