Vacation Thailand - Krabi  ... by ash-hotel.comKrabi Thailand

Map of Krabi
Known as the "Emerald of the Andaman" from the brilliant hues of its offshore waters, Krabi's attractions are its beautiful white beaches, myriad small islands dotted Krabi1.JPG (6340 bytes)along its coast and the fabled Phi Phi island group, a mecca for sun worshippers and divers. Krabi's charm is its tranquility and lack of serious development. The town is unspoilt and low rise, meandering along the banks of the Krabi river. Its people, a mixture of Buddhists and Muslims, speak odd dialects, are courteous and friendly. Krabi offers the adventurous traveller not just beautiful beaches and clear green seas, but numerous islands, large and small, for exploring or even living like Robinson Crusoe for a while. There's also superb seafood at ridiculously low prices, and a people so friendly that they may want to come again soon.

Like most the best spots in the world KRABI was, until recently, a backpackers secret. Here in Southern Thailand, 800 kms from the hustle, bustle and pollution of Bangkok, set on the tip of remote Phra Nang headland, 55 kms east of Phuket by sea and 163 kms by road, it is only accessible by water and reached by crossing the hauntingly beautiful Phang Nga bay, with its magnificent seascape of curiously -shaped limestone outcrops, rising from the tourquoise blue-green waters of the These rocks, covered in green vegetation, appear as ghost-like apparitions through the sea-mist and are named, like Chicken Island, after the various animals and other images they conjure up.
Phang Nga is the spectacular bay which includes James Bond Island the location of the James Bond Film, The Man With The Golden Gun.
The memorable 70-minute sea journey from Phuket, makes you feel as if you're heading off to a remote island, but in reality it's part of the mainland - a jutting peninsula which is not easily accessible because of jungle and high cliffs which cut it off from the rest of the mainland and the nearby township of Krabi. Arriving at Krabi is special. You have just crossed the most breathtaking bay in memory and a pearl-white beach looms before you surrounded by towering limestone formations.

Once there, tourists head straight for Nang Bay, and its wondrous beaches of Noppharat Thara, Phra Nang and Rai Le, lined with coconut trees, looking for all the world like a stretch of forest in the sea. Here are the resorts and bungalows, as well as the starting point for exploring the islands, cliffs and caves nearby.
For instance, take a 15-minute boat ride to the nearby Cape Phra Nang, where hidden powdery white beaches face up to towering cliffs that attract climbers from around the world. Here the mystical Phra Nang Cave (translated as Princess Cave), full of stalactites and stalagmites, lures local fishermen who leave carved wooden phallic symbols before heading out to sea. Offshore an archipelago of 38 small islands beckon visitors who want to explore and dive.

In the middle of Phangna Bay is the famed Phi Phi Island group. A ferry from Chao Fah Pier in Krabi town makes the 2 hour trip daily. The larger island of Phi Phi Don is also the most spectacular. Its cliff-lined twin bays lie back to back, separated by a strip of coconut groves like a green mirror dividing the sea. The waters are crystal clear, great for swimming. The bays are dotted with resorts and bungalows, while tour operators offer divers many opportunities to explore the startling coral reefs that surround the island. On the otherside of the island is a fishing village. Its smaller sister, Phi Phi Le is also popular for its soaring cliffs and forbidding Viking Cave. Inside, wall drawings of boats are believed to have been done by Vikings, a fanciful but highly unlikely legend. The cave is also home to thousands of swallows, whose nests in the high ceilings are in great demand from gourmets. The cliffs of Phi Le Bay rise sheer out of the water, making it look like a lagoon.

While further south, the waters of Lo Sa Ma Bay are a deep emerald green, washing an unspoilt coral reef below. Further south of Krabi town is the island of Lanta, almost attached to the mainland,

A very long beach, quiet and sandy. During low tide can walk out to some of islands in the bay

Ao Nang
Ao Nang (Nang Bay) about 10 minutes by car from Krabi town, also provides boat service, but subject to weather conditions. Big Fast boats can be hired from Phuket, the fare depending on boat type. Schedules and journey times may change during monsoon season with fewer crossing a day.
