Khon Kaen has been a site of human habitation for thousand of years. Now a bustling province, Khon Kaen is a centre of development and has become the de facto capital of the region.
Among several important archaeological sites, Chum Pae ancient town, and Ku Puai Noi, a 12th century Khmer laterite sanctuary, are the most outstanding.


 Ban Chiang
 This village can be dated back approximately 7,500 years. The prehistorical culture of Ban Chiang  has become the  subject of great interest to the archeological community. It is believed that the designed of Ban Chiang earthernware are the oldest pottery design in the world. The Fine Art Department has retained the conditions of archeological excavations of archeological excavations to display how pots, tools and other utensils were beried along with the dead. Unesco declared Ban Chiang as the 359th world heritage site in December 1992.
 

Chonnabot Silk

This local silk material, especially the renowned Mud Mee (tie dyed) silk, is a favourite shopping item for visitors to Khon Kaen. The factory is located in Amphoe Chonnabot, 16 kms along Route 2057 off Highway 2 at Km 399 marker.
